Generic Name:  Potassium Chloride Concentrate Intravenous Infusion B.P.

Clinical Particulars:

 LAKSOL-KCl 7.46%, is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, concentrated, ready to-use, solution of Potassium

Chloride for electrolyte replenishment in a single dose container for intravenous administration.

Potassium is the major cation of body cells and is concerned with the maintenance of body fluid composition and electrolyte balance. Potassium participates in carbohydrate utilization, protein synthesis, and is critical in the regulation of nerve conduction and muscle contraction, particularly in the heart.

Chloride, the major extracellular anion, closely follows the metabolism of sodium, and changes in the acid-base of the body are reflected by changes in the chloride concentration.

Therapeutic Indications:

Potassium Chloride Infsuion is used as a source of the potassium cation for the treatment or prevention of potassium depletion in patients for whom dietary measures or oral medication are inadequate. Potassium salts may also be used cautiously in those taking digoxin where potassium depletion may cause arrhythmias.

Dosage:

Dosage will be dependent upon individual patient circumstances, such as age, weight and clinical condition and is determined by the attending physician.

Contraindicated:

Hyperkalaemia, hyperchloraemia, impaired renal function with oliguria, anuria or azotaemia, Addison’s disease, acute dehydration and heat cramps.

Warnings/Precautions:

• Only use with specialist advice
• ECG should be used throughout and monitored continuously
• High concentrations of potassium cause serious cardiotoxicity, so the concentration of the solution should not exceed 3g (40mmol)/L and the diluted solution given slowly (maximal rate 20mmol/L)
• Initially do not use with glucose infusions – glucose may further decrease potassium levels
• Extreme caution in patients on potassium sparing diuretics and other drugs that may increase potassium
